About the workshop

In this hands-on workshop, you will design and paint your own set of ceramic Mahjong tiles using underglaze. Inspired by both traditional Mahjong imagery and personal storytelling, this is a space to explore your creativity while reflecting on memory, culture, and identity. 

No experience needed, just come as you are!

What to expect

  1. Workshop start at 6:10 pm (Please be on time)

What you will do

  • Design and paint your own set of four (4) Mahjong tiles

  • Explore traditional symbols or create your own interpretation

  • Reflect on a personal story, memory, or cultural connection

  • Contribute to a shared experience of storytelling with your tiles

Materials Provided

  • Pre-made bisque-fired ceramic tiles (Average Dimension: 3cm x 4cm x 2cm)

  • Red, Blue and Green Underglazes (ceramic paints)

  • Brushes, pencils, and tracing materials

  • Wooden Skewer

  • Design references

All tiles will be clear glazed and kiln-fired after the workshop, and will be ready for pickup in approximately one week.

Participants will receive an email notification when their tiles are ready. Pickup will take place at Clay Space Studio (1324 Gerrard Street East), Monday to Friday, 12–5 PM.

What to Bring

  • Inspiration (photos, ideas, references), all sides of the tiles are for you to design. 

  • A willingness to experiment and have fun

  • Bring a story to share

Design Ideas

You can create:

  • Traditional or Reimagined Mahjong symbols (dots, bamboo, characters)

  • Cultural motifs or patterns

  • Personal symbols, memories, or icons

  • Abstract or experimental designs

There’s no right or wrong — your tile is your story.

Photo & Documentation Notice

Photos and videos will be taken during the workshop for documentation and sharing on the DeNarrative website and social platforms. Your tile and any stories you choose to share may also be included as part of this project.
